Remnants of an air raid shelter

Restoration work at Stara Rzeźnia continues uninterrupted, and nearly every day brings new surprises!
Recently, we discovered a reinforced concrete room with a double ceiling that housed a safe. Now, we have uncovered an air-raid shelter from World War II.
It is estimated that wartime destruction—including the 1945 Battle for the Citadel—damaged 90% of the site’s equipment and machinery, along with 60% of the slaughterhouse buildings.
During the war, the building’s basement was converted into an air-raid shelter, with steel doors installed in hallways and passages to serve as security locks. We have decided to preserve one of these doors as a historical exhibit. In an adjacent room, also in the basement of the Southern Residential House, another wartime relic remains intact: a steel shutter designed to protect windows during bombings.
Converting the basement into a shelter required strengthening the ceiling. The original brick-and-steel structure was reinforced with additional concrete slabs cast on-site. After cleaning and technical assessments, this reinforced ceiling continues to serve as a structural element of the building.
Previously, another wartime relic—a one-person Einmannbunker—was donated to the Armament Museum at Poznan’s Citadel.
